King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz al Saud - Gold And Silver
COIN DESCRIPTIONS With its tireless endeavours to help build a world without hunger, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO/UN) has led international efforts to defeat famine. As part of its work, the FAO awards the Agricola Medal to distinguished personalities for their contributions to the promotion of sustainable food production, world food security, the eradication of poverty and international cooperation. In 1997, the FAO presented the Agricola Medal to King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia in recognition of his role in the development and modernisation of the agricultural sector of the Kingdom and his contribution to the eradication of hunger and poverty in developing countries.Scarcely ideal for agricultural development, Saudi Arabia consists largely of desert terrain, with modest natural ground water resources, and is subject to extremes of
temperature. Despite these unfavourable initial circumstances, the kingdom has managed to develop the agricultural sector over the last three decades to an extraordinary degree. The cultivated land in the kingdom has jumped from only 600 hectares in 1980 to over 12 million acres in 1998 and the country has achieved self-sufficiency in a number of areas of food production, especially wheat production. In addition, the Kingdom has promoted and supported numerous endeavours to assist other developing countries in improving the living conditions of rural people and fostering their own agricultural development.
